Now that she has to enter a segregated placement for next year, that foresight helps! I justn hope I can find enough mainstream stuff to keep her from being isolated started next year.rickismomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07817042750959998664noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23192245.post-30386838822588271062009-05-28T18:45:13.171-04:002009-05-28T18:45:13.171-04:00Well said and so true. Shouldn't people with disabilities have the choice to do what they want, just as everyone else does? What is right for one person may not be right for another. Provide the options and let the person decide.Renahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15911608453762091207noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23192245.post-50949886310607993682009-05-27T22:18:08.231-04:002009-05-27T22:18:08.231-04:00All I can say is I wish 60% were true. But the comparison between maternal age and having a child with Down syndrome and getting Alzheimer's in this case is a nonsequitur.
TeresaTeresa Codyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02145836007204911826noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23192245.post-7134599279465480112009-05-27T18:39:55.594-04:002009-05-27T18:39:55.594-04:00datri, I couldn't have picked a program when my da...datri, I couldn't have picked a program when my daughter was that young based on adult options because my daughter changes and changes and changes her mind STILL about what she wants to do! (She is 15 now.) My daughter has had a mixture of programs and I have always worked for her to belong to a mixture of various types of communities--it can be done and you will do it too, of course!

Other commenter: I removed your comment because it contained an advertisement. Your comments about depression and Alzheimers were interesting.

Personal mindset does have an effect on depression in all people which is why the combination of medication and talk-therapy is the most effective treatment in all populations.

Alzheimer's symptoms are seen in 60% of adults with Down syndrome per the research. It is seen as a risk factor not a foregone conclusion, much the way maternal age is a risk factor for Down syndrome though 90% of babies with Down syndrome are born to mothers under 35 years of age. (And my acquaintance with large numbers of adults with Down syndrome bears this out as well. This is only anecdotal information of course, but I find it interesting.)

And in all populations the risk of Alzheimer's increases as we age to nearly 100% after age 95--and still many 95 year olds do not exhibit symptoms....

Aging, Alzheimer's and Down syndrome are all highly individual in their presentation.Terrihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14802459265546733391noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23192245.post-51030992386830647682009-05-25T20:09:01.235-04:002009-05-25T20:09:01.235-04:00Balance, indeed. I hate having to defend my decision to want Kayla in a special private special ed school, one that also has an adult program that she could grow into. I don't feel as if I'm segregating her there since I always take her out to local community events, too.

And Dr. Capone rocks. :-)datrihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11780816487520416497noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23192245.post-84103135155985247992009-05-25T10:53:52.875-04:002009-05-25T10:53:52.875-04:00Thank you, Ruth, and Happy Memorial Day to you als...Thank you, Ruth, and Happy Memorial Day to you also.Terrihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14802459265546733391noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23192245.post-81220751959705800652009-05-25T08:44:46.440-04:002009-05-25T08:44:46.440-04:00Happy Memorial Day, Terri.
